Is there any person in the world that doesn’t get those strange and mysterious white spots on the nails from time to time? I think that there isn’t, because they are very common and any of us has to experience them in our life.
They can be indicators for many things, because their different patterns may be symptomatic of different causative conditions. It is a sign from your body, telling you that you are not healthy. It is very important to know what causes them and take respective measures to treat them.
A generally accepted opinion says that the main cause for this kind of spots is lack of calcium in the body. The problem can be solved only by taking this mineral.
But, this opinion is considered as a myth by the German Institute of General Medicine in Hanover. A doctor from the institute named Ulrike-Junius-Voker, says that our nails are composed from 100 to 150 thin layers, and calcium is consisted only 0,2 %. What causes changes in some parts of our nails is a small nail trauma such as the stroke or minor injuries. They are visible as discoloration or small pockets of air on their surface.
There are also cases where the main reason for the appearing of white spots is lack of calcium, but those cases are rare, and that mostly happens with patients that have severe deficiency of calcium triggered by some other diseases.
Other things which can cause their appearance and allergic reaction are nail polishing, nail hardener or even nail polish remover.
Also, application of acrylic nails on your fingers can cause trauma to the nail base.
– Nail injuries
Those white spots that can appear on our nails, and have different forms like dots and lines, are an illness called leukonychia. One of the main reason for their appearance can be an injury of the base of the nail, called matrix. It takes some time for them to appear after the injury, so you may have forgotten about it. Those injuries can be banging ypur finger on the door or banging it on the countertop or with a hammer. Another cause of injury can be having a manicure of your nails very often.
– Serious diseases
Having white spots on your nails can be a serious symptom for some serious disease. Because of that you will need to consult your doctor if you notice some discoloration of your nails. And of course, the earlier you do that, the more likely it is to treat the condition effectively.
Diseases that cause white spots:
– Liver disease like hepatitis and cirrhosis are one of the more serious causes for white spots on our nails.
– Kidney disease have some symptoms that can cause white spots, like nails that are possibly white and pink. Due to kidney failure, they can be partially turned white.
– Anemia, which is also a sign for lack of iron in our blood, can also produce white spots in the nails. Adding iron to the diet, by eating leafy greens and meats, and also avoiding dairy, can be very useful in getting back the iron in the blood.
– Also, there are cases where the person can develop koilonychias, which results with abnormally shaped thin fingernails with raised ridges that curve inward.
