One recent research, which was trying to find the cause of pain in fibromyalgia patients, has discovered that it does not originate from the brain.
This is one massive discovery which marks the end of the mystery about fibromyalgia. It is a condition which affects a lot of people around the world, and it is usually treated with the use of painkillers.
The doctors consider this condition as a psychological disorder, but nowadays, the scientists have discovered that the pain comes from unusual place, which are the blood vessels in the hand.
This discovery can lead to some new treatments and possible future cures, which are great news for more than 5 000 000 Americans. The scientists working on solving this mystery were focused on the skin of the hand of a patient who had a lack of sensory nerve fibers in the so – called arterioles – venule (AV) referrals in the skin sample.
Until that discovery, the scientific community thought that those fibers are responsible for regulating the blood flow and that they don’t have role in the pain, but now they have found a direct link between the nerves and the fibromyalgia pain. The discovery is now groundbreaking, and it may also answer questions why those people who suffer from fibromyalgia report pain in their hands and why the clod seems to aggravate their symptoms.
According to one neuroscientist, named Dr. Frank L. Rice, the science has previously thought that these nerve endings were involved in the process of blood flow regulation. But, the research has showed that they can also contribute to the conscious sense of touch. Dr. Rice says the following:
“This poorly managed blood flow can be the source of discomfort and muscle aches and a sense of fatigue, presumably due to an accumulation of lactic acid and low levels of inflammation in patients with fibromyalgia. This, in turn, can contribute to hyperactivity in the brain.”
The current treatment used for fibromyalgia has not brought relief to every patient. The common therapies are made by using narcotic analgesic, anticonvulsants and antidepressants, as well as some simple tips like sleeping more and exercising on regular basis. However, now when the cause of the condition has been discovered, the patients can look forward for possible cure.
One of the scientists, who have been involved in the study, says the following:
“When there is something that does not fit into their understanding, some doctors underestimate their patients and tell them that they are crazy. The prescription of SSRIS against fibromyalgia is not the answer – it was nothing more than a lobotomy or hysterectomy.”
That study is actually very promising and it also offers a better future for the unfortunate patients, who suffer from fibromyalgia.
