There were 36 men and women included in the study, divided into three groups. All the 3 groups were given a calorie intake limit of 350 calories. The first group had oatmeal for breakfast, the second one, cornflakes and the third only drank water for their breakfast. All the three groups were asked to record their level of satiety in the following 3 hours. Blood samples were also taken from them, in order to keep track of their blood sugar, as well as insulin levels. All the subjects were given the same lunch.
The results have discovered that the group that consumed oatmeal had fewest cravings through the morning and afternoon, and consumed 31% fewer calories for lunch. The oatmeal breakfast provided a lot of benefits for the people with excess weight and it proved to be very effective, as they consumed 50% fewer calories for lunch. The subjects of the group that consumed cornflakes were already hungry three hours after they had the breakfast. The same results were also experienced by the group that drank only water.
What actually makes the oatmeal particularly beneficial is the fact that it stays for longer period in the stomach, unlike the cornflakes, as they increase the blood glucose levels and it automatically leads to a sudden drop.
There are also a lot of additional studies that confirmed this theory, which says that the oatmeal is one of the most beneficial foods for breakfast, because it promotes weight loss as it helps you to cut down the calorie intake by 31-50%. The best thing about it is that it is long – lasting.
