After taking biopsies from the fat of several patients, researchers have found that the chances of burning fat on the thighs and abdomen are higher in winter than in summer. In fact, the lower the temperature is the bigger the transformation of white into brown fat is. Sitting in overheated rooms for a long time, either at home or at work, is causing a slowdown of the natural process of burning calories. The natural process of burning calories is in fact a reaction of our body to warm itself up when the temperature is lower.
According to another study, published in The New York Times, a group of people were put in a metabolic chamber at a low temperature. Four weeks later, the volume of brown fat in these people was doubled, they burned more calories than usual and have become more sensitive to insulin.
The practice is called “cold thermogenesis” and can lead to doubling of the amount of brown adipose tissue, which is metabolically active, so the more calories will be burned.
Cold thermogenesis with great intensity includes wearing compression underwear filled with ice packs and ice vest. The good thing is that you can also do this at home.
How to Do it
Just prepare an ice pack and keep it applied to the fatty area for 30 minutes. Repeat the procedure 3-4 times per week. However, you should be very careful, since the ice can cause you burns if used incorrectly. To avoid this, you should put a thin folded hand towel between the ice and the skin. You can then remove it after the body gets used to the coolness. Make sure to use a thin towel as thicker towels won’t allow the ice to penetrate enough.
