Very often, when we notice that we have little white nuggets in our tonsils, we feel as something is there stuck in our throat. These white nuggets are also known as tonsil stone, and those people who have them are not actually aware that they have them.
– What is the reason for tonsil stones?
The tonsil stones appear and develop when bacteria, mucus, dead skin cells, and leftover food particles start depositing in the tonsil crypts. Their color can be whitish or yellowish and they have soft and squishy texture. They can lead to several problems such as bad breath, throat irritation, as well as difficulty in swallowing food and even some breathing problems.
– Who is prone to tonsil stones?
If you suffer from some chronic inflammation of the tonsils, or if they are too big, or if you are maybe not practicing a good oral hygiene, the risk of having tonsil stones is much bigger.
Tonsillectomy or surgical removal is the conventional treatment for tonsil stones. However, this does not guarantee that the tonsil stones won’t appear again. Moreover, when you eliminate them, you will actually remove a part of the immune system which is needed in order to prevent bacteria and viruses from entering in your body.
– Some other ways of removing tonsil stones:
Beside surgery, there are also other less invasive methods of removing the tonsil stones, which you can actually perform in the comfort of your own home. Here, we are going to present you some of them:
1. Q – tips
If the Q – tip is big and visible enough so that you can reach the back of your throat, you can easily remove the tonsil stones. You should gently push thevisible area of the tonsils with the Q-tip until they’re dislodged. You should also do this in front of a mirror. When you apply enough pressure, the stones should pop out from behind the tonsil pockets.
2. Dental irrigation syringes
In order to flush the stones out from the tonsils, you should point the curved tip of the syringe directly at the pockets in the tonsils affected with the stones. Unlike the Q – tips, these syringes will help you in removing the stones which are deeper in the tonsils and are not visible. You should make sure to keep the head down, so the stones will fall out of your mouth. The mixture in the syringe should be comprised from equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and warm water. Hydrogen peroxide will ease the removal of the stones, as it creates and environment where the bacteria cannot thrive.
3. Oral irrigator
This water flosser has a motor, water reservoir, and a specialized water flosser nozzle. It is a method for flossing with water instead of with a string. In order to remove tonsil stones, you should position the nozzle directly at the tonsil crevices and blast them out. Be careful not to hurt the tonsils by being over – aggressive. Also set the irrigator on the lowest setting.
4. Oral probiotics
These strains of good bacteria have the power to suffocate the bad bacteria which is in the mouth and which causes the tonsil stones. The most effective probiotic against tonsil stones is S. salivarius K12.First, take a probiotic capsule, open it and mix the content which is inside it with 4 oz. of warm water and stir the mixture until the capsule content is completely dissolved in the water. Then, swish the solution in the mouth i.e. close to the tonsil stones area. In order to achieve this you should tilt the head back a bit before spitting the solution out. Chewing gums and toothpastes can also be very helpful in the removal of tonsil stones.
