What is the longest a person has ever lived for? In this article, you will meet Li Ching Yuen, who is a man who lived an astonishing 256 years. And if you think that this is a myth or a fictional tale, you are wrong.
According to one article in New York Times, from 1930, Wu Chung-chieh, who was a professor of the Chengdu University, has discovered some Imperial Chinese government records from 1827, congratulating Li Ching-Yuen on his 150th birthday, and further documents later congratulating him on his 200th birthday in 1877.
In the 1928, one correspondent at the New York Times wrote that many of the old men in Li’s neighborhood claimed that their grandfathers knew him when they were only little boys and that in that time he was a grown man.
Li Ching Yuen reportedly started his herbalist career when he was 10 years old, gathering herbs in the mountain ranges and learning about their potency for longevity. For almost 40 years, he survived on a diet based on herbs like lingzhi, goji berry, wild ginseng, he shou wu and gotu kola and rice wine. In 1749, when he was 71, he joined the Chinese armies as a teacher of martial arts. He was said to be a much loved figure in the community around him, being married 23 times and fathering over 200 children.
According to the tales told in his province, which were generally accepted, he had the ability to read and write as a child, and by his 10th birthday he had traveled in Kansu, Shansi, Tibet, Annam, Siam and Manchuria gathering herbs. During the first hundred years, he continued with this occupation. After that he switched to selling herbs gathered by other people. He sold lingzhi, goji berry, wild ginseng, he shou wu and gotu kola along with another Chinese herbs, and he also lived off a diet of these herbs and rice wine.
– But, he was not the only one!
According to one of Li’s disciples, he had once encountered an even older man, who was 500 years old, who taught him Qigong exercises and dietary recommendations, which would help him in extending his lifespan, to some superhuman proportions. Apart from Qigong and a herb-rich diet, what are the other things that we can learn from this Master of Longevity?
And how about this: on death bed, Li said famously: “I have done all that I have to do in this world”.
Could these peaceful last words also hint at one of the biggest secrets to a long and prosperous life as well? It is interesting to note that in the West, people are often taught to believe that aging is a thing which must be “beaten” with high tech infrared devices and state of the art medication.
– His secret to long health
When he was asked what his secret about longevity was, Li said: “Keep a quiet heart, sit like a tortoise, walk sprightly like a pigeon and sleep like a dog.”These were the words of Li’s advice, which he had to Wu Pei-fu, the warlord, who took Li into his house to learn the secret of extremely long life.
Li maintained that inner calm and peace of mind, combined with some breathing techniques which were also the secrets of amazing longevity. It is obvious that his diet has played a great role. Another interesting thing is that the old living person in recorded history attributes his long life to his state of mind.
– Why is this so hard to believe?
As the average lifespan for the Western world currently is between 75 and 80 years, the thought of someone living over 100 years, seems like quite the stretch. And about the thought of someone living over 200 years, it seems extremely suspicious and impossible. But, what is the reason of not believing that people can live so long?
We should have in mind that some people in the world don’t live a grueling 9-5 lifestyle they don’t have to deal with the stress of debt, they also don’t breathe polluted air in the city and they exercise regularly. They also don’t eat refined sugars or flour, or any other foods which have passed the process of spraying pesticides on them. Those people aren’t living off of the standard American diet.
Those people also don’t eat fatty meats, sugary desserts, and genetically modified foods. There are also no antibiotics, no alcohol and no tobacco. Their diets not only exclude junk foods which we use so often, but they also include some super foods, as well as herbs which are like steroids for our organs, and for the immunity as well.
They also spend their free time in the nature, practicing some breathing techniques, as well as meditating, which all have been proven to improve the mental, physical and emotional health. They keep the things simple, and also get a proper sleep. They spend a great deal of time in the nature under the sunlight. When people get a chance to relax on the sun, they instantly feel rejuvenated and call this a “vacation”. But imagine spending a lifetime doing the same thing but in the mountains, also combining that with perfect mental, spiritual and physical well – being.
We are sure that if we all did the things we knew we were supposed to do,living 100 years old would be commonplace. When the body is treated in the right way, who knows how long we can live for?
